Akron Elementary and Mentone Elementary offer after school homework help programs called Flyer Time and Bulldog Buddies. Both programs work with targeted students that are at risk for failure or do not have any support at home to complete homework. Teachers, based on academic need, nominate students to participate in these homework interventions.
Students are assigned to a small group with a college student mentor or an adult mentor two times per week after school. On average 25 students per school are served by the program. The mentors talk to classroom teachers and go over student assignment sheets to make sure that all homework is completed. Once the homework is completed, the mentors have access to educational games to play with the students. This program not only provides homework help but also a positive mentor that will encourage the elementary students to improve and grow academically.
